MAP supports UK exporters’ expansion in the USA and Canada 

MAP connects over 260 UK companies with lead representatives of the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) to explore new export opportunities in the United States and Canada.  

DBT’s responsibilities include: supporting and promoting British businesses to grow and export; opening up new markets for businesses by removing barriers; and, promoting free trade, economic security and resilient supply chains.   

The Department has nine offices in the USA (Washington, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco) and five in Canada (Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver). 

The USA and Canada rank among the top export markets for UK companies.  

The US is the UK’s largest export market for goods and services and the world’s largest economy. It offers substantial potential for UK exporters. Total UK exports to the USA for the four quarters to end Q3 2023 totalled £193.1 billion. 

Canada is the UK’s 12th largest export market. Total UK exports to Canada for the four quarters to end Q3 2023 totalled £16.4 billion.  

MAP’s works closely with the Department for Business and Trade comes, including via its role advising Made in Britain on international trade and supply chains. Made in Britain is a trade association with a growing membership, now of more than 1,900 UK manufacturing companies.

MAP strengthens Babcock’s ties with UK manufacturers 

MAP connects Babcock, a leading international provider of critical and complex engineering services, with 40 UK small and medium sized enterprise (SME) manufacturers to explore new supply chain relationships. 

Babcock is a prominent partner to the UK government, playing a vital role in national defence, saving lives, and protecting communities. Headquartered in the UK, Babcock supports technology and business process transformation programs for clients such as the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Their government contracts highlight the importance of SME involvement, including for the Type 31 Frigate programme at their Rosyth facility.  

Babcock procures around £2.6 billion of goods and services each year. In 2022, Babcock contributed £3.3 billion to the UK's GDP, paid £770 million in taxes, and supported nearly 57,000 jobs across the country.

MAP fosters new pathways to China for UK exporters

MAP collaborates with the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) in China and UK exporters. Work between April and June 2022 includes discussions with His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for China, John Edwards, and making direct connections for UK companies to explore new export opportunities and overcome market access barriers.

DBT’s responsibilities include: supporting and promoting British businesses to grow and export; opening up new markets for businesses by removing barriers; and, promoting free trade, economic security and resilient supply chains. 

Since China initiated its economic reforms in 1978, the country has experienced an average annual GDP growth of nearly 10%, lifting more than 800 million people (total population of 1.4 billion) out of poverty. China's GDP growth was 8.1% in 2021. By 2030, China and Hong Kong are expected to host 33% of the world’s middle-class consumers. 

In 2021, UK exports to China totalled £27 billion, marking a 3% increase from 2020. China is now the UK’s third-largest trading partner, accounting for 7.3% of the UK's total trade.
